Science lab carts are mobile storage and/or workstation units that feature chemical-resistant finishes and countertops for safe use.

Connecting Hoses: Connecting hoses are durable hoses that connect to the sink fixture faucet and drain, providing water from a water bottle under the sink and a drain option that collects the used water in a second bottle for later disposal.

Data Ports: Data ports refer to internet or USB ports built into an electrical panel in select science lab carts.

Drop-Leaf Extension Shelf: Drop-leaf extension shelf refers to the two hinged shelves at the ends of select science lab cart models that rest flat against the sides when closed, or open fully for extending the countertop to increase workspace.

Duplex Outlet: A duplex outlet is an electrical unit built into the frame of a science lab cart with two outlets, usually 3-prong for flexible use.

Electronic Lock: Electronic lock indicates the use of an electrical lock mechanism on select science cabinets, with programmable passwords, recorded access, external battery backup, and keys for emergencies.

Extension Cord: Extension cord is a power cord that provides increased reach to nearby electrical outlets.

Fixed Shelf: Fixed shelf refers to a base shelf or other stationary shelf that cannot be removed or adjusted. The fixed shelf typically provides increased support to an overall storage unit frame or cabinet.

GFI-Protected AC Outlet: GFI-protected AC outlet refers to an electrical outlet built into a science lab cart that has a grounded design to automatically cut power when a power surge, spike, shortage, or other imbalance is detected. The concept reduces risk of electric shock to users and protects technology from electrical damage.

Locking Swivel Casters: Locking swivel casters are wheels set in attachments that permit 360° rotation for easier gliding, maneuvering, and steering when the cart is in motion.

Magnetic Door Latch: Magnetic door latch is a magnet attachment that secures doors in place, even when not locked, to prevent them from flying open when the science lab cart is in motion.

Multi-Point Lock Mechanism: A multi-point lock mechanism is a keyed lock that secures the cabinet doors at the location of the lock assembly while simultaneously extending rods into other parts of the frame to reinforce the locked doors.

Optional Backpack Hook: Optional backpack hook refers to a design feature offered on select science lab carts to provide a durable hook for students to stow backpack or bookbag during class.

Optional Mirror: Optional mirror is a framed mirror that connects to the crossbar and uprights on select science lab carts, providing increased visibility of science lab demonstrations and instruction.

Optional Mirror / Markerboard: Optional mirror/markerboard is a framed enhancement for select science lab carts, with a mirror on one side and a dry-erase markerboard on the other side. The framed visual aid enhancement connects to the uprights and crossbar assembly on the cart.

Optional Steel Legs: Optional steel legs are available for the stainless steel cabinets to raise the base off the floor and provide stationary support as an alternative to the mobile casters.

Paddle Lock: Paddle lock is a lock built into a square-style paddle handle on select storage cabinet doors. When engaged, the lock secures the cabinet. When not engaged, the handle lifts to open the doors for cabinet access.

Pegboard: Pegboard is a wood product panel with pre-drilled holes for use with hooks to store tools and equipment. Pegboards are found on the backsides of select cabinet doors, with hooks included.

Polyethylene Bottles: Polyethylene bottles are plastic bottles used with a sink fixture in science lab carts with built-in sink, allowing water supply to the faucet and a collection bottle for the drain.

Propane Burner and Stand: Propane burner with stand comes with select science lab carts, providing a burner assembly for use with propane to heat beakers and other parts of science lab experiments or demonstrations.

Push Handle: Push handle is a built-in steering and maneuvering handle on many science lab carts for easier transport.

Rear Door Access: Rear door access is the ability to access part or all of a science lab cart from a panel at the back of the frame. The rear panel door typically locks for security and often allows access to a charging system or power strip built within the storage cart.

Recessed Door Handle: Recessed door handle is a cabinet handle set within the profile of the door for a smoother appearance in comparison to traditional cabinet handles that stick out for grabbing.

Removable Shelf Dividers: Removable shelf dividers are dividing pieces that allow shelves to be partitioned for organizing stored contents. These dividers are removable and adjustable to customize the storage cabinet and shelf as needed.

Single-Point Lock Mechanism: Single-point lock mechanism is a keyed lock that secures at the location of the lock assembly only.

Slide-Out Writing Surface: Slide-out writing surface is a platform panel that slides out from a customized opening in a science lab cart frame to provide a smooth writing surface when needed. The slide-out writing surface is often in line with storage drawers and/or found directly under the countertop for comfortable reach.

Stainless Steel Sink: Stainless steel sink is a sink fixture made of steel alloy, typically with 10% or more chromium metal, for a corrosion-resistant durable design.

Uprights and Crossbar: Uprights and crossbar are a series of rods, assembled to form an H-shape or half-H design, set in rod sockets that are found in many science lab cart work surfaces. The crossbar usually includes clips or clamps for holding optional mirror, markerboard, or monitor display, depending on the design and individual preferences.

2-Outlet Cord Reel: The 2-outlet cord reel is an electrical power cord storage unit built into select science lab carts with two integrated power outlets for additional power support. The power cord wraps around the cord reel for safekeeping when not in use.

2/3-Extension Drawer Slides: Drawers described as having 2/3-extension drawer slides have metal support pieces that secure the drawer to the frame and permit the drawer to open two-thirds of the way, with the back third of the drawer remaining within the drawer compartment.

3” Backstop: A 3” backstop is a raised panel standing 3”-tall, assembled at the back edge of a science lab cart worktop to prevent items from sliding off the back.

8-Outlet Power Strip: An 8-outlet power strip is an electrical unit with eight 3-prong outlets, supplied by an extension cord that reaches nearby outlets in wall or floor.

20-Gauge Steel Shelves: Steel shelves described as 20-gauge steel shelves are composed of durable 20-gauge steel, usually cold-rolled for increased strength and shaping.

ChemGuard Top: ChemGuard Top refers to a laminate countertop finish that resists damage and signs of wear when exposed to chemicals typical of science lab and classroom environments. The ChemGuard finish also endures pressure and heat for added benefits.

Chemical-Resistant Finish: Chemical-resistant finish describes a wide range of finishes used on science lab carts from laminates to topcoats, all of which resist damage when exposed to typical science lab chemicals and cleaning solvents.

ChemSurf Top: ChemSurf top refers to a chemical-resistant laminate finish used to design the work surfaces of many science lab carts. ChemSurf is favored for it’s ability to resist damage when exposed to typical science lab and classroom chemicals and cleaning products.

Dovetail Joinery: Dovetail joinery is a woodworking technique used in making all-wood drawers. Fan-style cutouts resembling the tails of doves are made along the conjoining edges of two wood panels and the cutout shapes are slid together to form an assembled structure that resists pulling apart.

Epoxy-Coated Steel Drawer Slides: Epoxy-coated steel drawer slides are the steel assembly tracks that hold drawers in place and allow them to glide open and closed. The steel is coated with epoxy finish to prevent corrosion, damage, and wear from frequent use and/or exposure to typical science lab chemicals and substances.

This wood is considered environmentally friendly because it is made using wood from trees grown in a plantation setting and cut down at the end of their usefulness in producing latex.

Flat-Panel Monitor Cutout: A flat-panel monitor cutout is a customized opening made in the top work surface of select science lab carts, designed to hold a flat panel monitor. A Plexiglas panel is included for viewing with monitor in the cutout; a matching black panel is included for concealing the monitor cutout when not used.

Monitor Positioning Options: Monitor positioning options refer to the option to place flat-panel monitor within the monitor cutout of the media cart, or above the work surface to suit different viewing needs.

Non-Toxic Water-Based Clear Lacquer: Non-toxic water-based clear lacquer is a clear acrylic topcoat that offers a non-toxic, water-based design for healthier composition. The lacquer is used to protect wood and veneer components on select science lab cart models.

Phenolic Resin Monitor Cutout Panel Cover: A phenolic resin monitor cutout panel cover is included with the media cart to conceal the monitor cutout when not used.

Plexiglas Monitor Cutout Panel Cover: Plexiglas monitor cutout panel cover is a clear window-style Plexiglas panel included with the media cart to cover the monitor opening while retaining visibility.

Unitized Frame: Unitized frame describes science lab cart frames made of single or welded components to form a stronger support structure.

Vented Bottom: Vented bottom describes ventilation cutouts made in the bottom of select science lab multimedia or technology carts, designed to dissipate heat produced by electronic equipment.

Welded Steel Frame: Welded steel frame describes science lab carts made with a steel frame assembly, welded by the manufacturer for lasting strength.

5-Knuckle Hinges: A 5-knuckle hinge is a cabinet door hinge that features five interlocking parts that join to form a uniform tube-like assembly to support the hinge pin or bolt.

Thermofused Melamine Finish: Thermofused melamine finish is a laminate-style finish made with fewer layers but applied using heat and pressure to form a permanent bond to the core panels. Like laminate finish, melamine is impact-resistant and endures regular use without stains, scratches, or other similar damage.

UV Frame Finish: UV frame finish refers to a protective topcoat that covers wood frames and veneers. The UV frame finish may refer to finish cured by UV light for a hard, protective topcoat layer, and/or protect the frame from UV light exposure.


All Steel Parts are Finished: All steel parts are finished indicating that the steel components (i.e. frame parts, screws, bolts, drawer slides) are finished with a durable paint or epoxy coating to protect from corrosion, damage, and signs of wear.

Baked-On Enamel Paint: Baked-on enamel paint is a protective paint finish that is applied then baked to cure for a hard finish. The baked-on enamel paint is often glossy and provides lasting quality appearance.

Green Features: Green features indicate the science lab cart is constructed using environmentally friendly materials, finishes, processes, and/or the product is recyclable for an Earth-friendly design. The use of recycled materials or powder-coat paint finish is considered to add to the “green features,” among other design features in the science lab cart collections.

Locking Cabinet: Locking cabinet refers to a one-door or two-door cabinet, usually in the base of a science lab cart, with a fixed bottom shelf. The doors will lock with a key for security. Select science lab carts have lockable sliding doors as an alternative design.

Locking Drawer: Locking drawer describes storage drawers or file drawers in science lab carts with individual locks for security.

Microscope Storage Capacity: Microscope storage capacity refers to the maximum number of microscopes a specified shelf or storage cart can support at a given time.

PVC Edge: PVC edge is an edge finish made by bonding a PVC plastic band to the raw edges of core panels and countertops. The PVC band is custom-sized to fit the edge thickness, and the band conceals the seam where the core panel and laminate or melamine finish are bonded.

Radius Corners: Radius corners are corner angles that have been rounded for a smoother look and safer design.

SEFA: SEFA is the Scientific Equipment and Furniture Association. Products listed with a SEFA logo have been verified to meet the design, safety and quality standards set by the Scientific Equipment and Furniture Association.

UL-Listed: Science lab carts that are UL-listed have been verified to meet the safety and quality standards of Underwriters Laboratories. UL listing typically involved carts with integrated electrical components.

Vinyl Edge: Vinyl edge is a band of vinyl that covers the raw edges of core panels, concealing the seam where the panel and laminate or melamine finish meet while providing impact-resistant support and a smooth look and feel.

Wide-Swing Doors: Wide-swing doors are cabinet doors that open beyond 180° for easier access to stored contents and interior cabinet area.
